Balmain Diffusion Line: Pierre Balmain

These are my two favourite looks from the collection.

British Vogue reports that the secondary line will be 'created by a new design team' and 'will not be overseen by the label's new creative director.'

The new diffusion line will be designed, produced and distributed by an Italian manufacturer while Christophe Decarnin's replacement focuses his efforts elsewhere.

News of Rousteing's lack of involvement in the project may come as disappointing news to those impressed by the 25-year-old's strong start at Balmain.

Rousteing, who replaced Christopher Decarnin as Balmain's head designer earlier this year, made a well-received debut with his Resort 2012 collection.

Of the diffusion line, Alain Hivelin, chairman and chief executive officer of Balmain, told WWD: 'The Pierre Balmain collection translates the codes of Balmain in a more casual and relaxed manner.'

'We see Pierre Balmain as a new and distinct brand that is inspired by the successes and history of a great house, but offers a look and product that respond to the needs and desires of today's marketplace.'

'Our goal is to position Pierre Balmain as a new global brand that will be established in all the key international markets,' he said. Costing a fraction of the main line where jeans and jackets sell for upwards of £2,000, Pierre Balmain will offer jeans, tees and evening wear priced from £105 to £795.

Of Rousteing's appointment, Alain Hivelin said: 'Olivier Rousteing will make Balmain “quintessentially Parisian” and “even more sophisticated and couture-like – without, of course, renouncing that ‘rock’ aesthetic that has been so important for us these the last few years.'
