I need a new Camera

Currently, i own a Sony T9 digital camera which is one of those point and shoot camera. I have to say, it is really lousy! Although its a 6 mega pixel camera but there is practically no other function except for the clear LCD. For those who are not into photography, you might think that Sony is good but i can tell you that Sony makes only beautiful but useless products. The image stabilizer does not work at all and this is the worst part. Most of my pictures turn out blurry. I have this camera for almost 2 year now and i think its time to change it...

I thought of investing in a Digital SLR camera but the cost is too high and the size is really huge. So i am thinking of getting a good camera that has the slightest similarity to a DSLR.

I am deciding between 2 camera and these are my choices:

Panasonic DMC-LX2

Leica D-Lux 3

I have set my eyes on the Panasonic for sometime but my friend recommended the Leica saying that it is really good. After some researching, i found out that these 2 cameras are actually the same. The specifications and design are the same except the brand itself. Panasonic actually makes all the camera for Leica except the M-8 which Leica produces themselves. The main reason why i like them is that both of them have manual settings which many of the present camera do not have. Secondly is the design, they look kind of "old-school" for me which i really like. Last but not least, Panasonic has the best image stabilizer.

The problem now is that both of them are the same but the prices are almost USD200 different, Leica being the more expensive one. So what is your opinion? Which one should i get or is there any other camera that you would recommend?

It's a tough call because they both have leica lenses, which is what I would have used to favor the leica camara over a Panasonic. Are the specs really the same? How good are they in low light circumstances? There are always small differences in the way each digital camera renders color, so I would test both of them out and see if you like the images they produce. Also, I recently discovered your blog and I am very much a fan. As soon as I am done with school this semester I will take the time to take pictures of my Dior Collection and send them your way.By the way, I am a collector of Dior Homme, and now that Hedi Slimane isn't making any new collections, I trying to get the more hard to find items out there. Do you know anyone that wants to part with some of their Dior Homme items for good money? Please let me know.

yeah, the specs are the same. You can check out their website...its true that every camera has a slight difference in imaging but i am thinking that this Leica camera is actually the Panasonic one except that it is in a Leica cover...

Thank you for reading my blog, i hope you will check it often...Its sad that hedi has left DH but i do hope that he will start designing menswear again...I hope you can send me some pictures of your collection soon so that i can share it with every reader...

Probably, you can check out ebay as there are some rare items once in awhile...

RICOH GR2

i've check that but it doesn't really meet my requirements

I think those cameras are on par to GX100 by Ricoh, and G9 by Canon. Those should meet your needs. I honestly prefer the Leica over the Panasonic, even though they are the same product. As I like that little red dot on my camera:)

Rimbo, whats your email? What are you looking for currently?

Between these two, I suggest you to go for Panasonic DMC-LX2 because they are absolutely the same, except the body case.

I've owned Panasonic DMC-LX2 since it was outed and been happy with it. The 2 worst things that I've faced are that the image stabilizer is not that helpful (because the camera's small and light, so it's easy to be shaken and your pictures're gonna be blurred). The other problem that everyone know is grain problem in high ISO.

Although I still love this camera a lots. And I think you will be fun to use it..

The other option I'd like to recommend is Ricoh Caplio GX100. It's also very good digital camera. Check out this link

Hope you can get the right one..

Thanks for all your comments, i guess i will have to try them out at the store before i actually buy it...

What camera are you guys using?

we are bunch of brand whores, thats why we prefer leicas over their panasonic twin:P

I still cant make up my mind between the Canon G9 and Ricoh GX100 though..

i think i will go ahead with panasonic because its cheaper...haha...the price difference is like USD200~!

Anonymous said...

200USD? thats peanuts to you, my rich friend!

Its like porsche cayanne compared to VW. Same engine, design etc, but the porsche one wins hands down, cause of its history, brand image and resale value!

Monsieur AG said...

200 is alot man! I am not rich...not even near there...

yeah, i agree with your comparison.

Just get the panasonic - same functions and it's cheaper... all electronics depreciate in value quickly, it's not wine, so if this is not something you plan on keeping for years, why waste an extra $200? I bought the Canon G9 because I don't plan to shop for another camera in years... who takes a 12.1 megapixel picture that often anyways? Try emailing such pictures to friends, they will hate you =)BTW, I love your website and read it often... however, I am not that big of a Hedi fan anymore because his recent work pales to his prior work in Luster and Strip.

And another note, Dior Homme in the US is starting their private sale on Nov 19. I will be pissed if the stuff I bought will go for 30-40% off ><

Monsieur AG said...

electronics basically has no value at all unless its a high end one...I think i will go for panasonic too...Anyway, i won't be using so high pixel all the time...so the pixel thing is not really a problem...

yeah, my friend told me about the sale too...DH usually will be on sale for 30% but i am not sure if it will increase this time round...

yes, sales are great... if you are wearing size 50 and above that is. Even before the sale starts, all the popular size 44 to 48 are usually gone. Except for the ugly designs. So I wouldnt really bank on the disc that much for dior homme.

Monsieur AG said...

hahaha...thats so true

but sometimes there are some small sizes if you are lucky

Hmmm I don't think Dior homme clothes sell out that fast in the US, I can usually find EU 48 or shirts size 38-39 on sale. Big department stores like Saks, Neiman Marcus, and Barneys carry them too and they have their own sales (I grabbed a bunch of Versace and Armani clothes for 40% off last week) and with the Thanksgiving and Xmas holidays coming, you should plan to take a look around. Plus it's a private sale at Dior homme on the 19th so I get first pick =) Not sure what to get though, I already got the waxed jeans, D-point belt, snap scarf (now those sold out fast!), 6.5 cm heels, and a number of shirts and ties. I think a lot of the jackets will be on sale. I noticed a lot of them were untouched at Saks and it's no wonder, the quality of the material is really bad... rough wool and what's with all the plastic buckles?! Have you seen the black polo with the plastic chest buckle? It's $380 but it looks like it should go for $20!

Monsieur AG said...

really? I didn't expect the sale to start so soon but i guess the sales of the current season is not doing well...

anyway, i hope you can get the items you've wanted...

I have some bad news. One of the images of Teru's collection has been used as the cover to a scam listing on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=170169292897&Category=57988&_trksid=p3907.m29
I'm having second thoughts on posting my favorite items. I would love to share my collection with you guys, but at the same time, I don't want to provide images for counterfeiters and scam artists to screw decent people over with. Thoughts?

Monsieur AG said...

hmmm...thats bad. That auction is totally fake, i am sure those who know about DH can see that it is fake. The jacket in the first picture is so different from the rest!

Anyway, counterfeiters have so many ways to get pictures of authentic DH. There are so many of pictures of real DH in other auctions...and everyone is saving them in their own PC...I hope you can still share your favourite collection with us, we would love to see it...I may add a watermark on all your pics if you want...

Anonymous said...

I agree with Alvin. they can just get them from anywhere. And if it makes you feel any better, you can have them watermarked.

Anonymous said...

I think watermarking them would be a good idea. I know they can get pictures anywhere, but we should still not make it any easier for them. Alright! I'll take picture of all of my Dior collection when the semester is over. Plus I just bought the campaign leather jacket from
SS 2007 and I am waiting for it to arrive. It should arrive around the time the semester comes to a wrap.

Great~! I will be waiting for your pics...
