Which strap should i get?

The joy of having a Panerai is the versatility of changing the strap all the time. A different strap can instantly change the look of your watch to suit the occasion. I've always heard people telling new Panerai owners this "Congrats on your first PAM, happy strap hunting" and this is exacting what i have been doing. So after all the googling and selection, it come down to these 3. Which do you think is nice?

My Panerai Luminor Marina

After a long wait, my first Panerai finally arrived. The size of the watch wasn't as big as i have imagined although its 44mm. Nonetheless, i still love it.

Anyway, i've got a story to tell...

I ordered this watch from a Authorised Dealer in the states. They gave me free shipping with Fedex but it can only be shipped to Hong Kong. Of course, i happily accepted it. The watch reached Hong Kong within a few days. I was too eager to have the watch so i asked a relative to reship it to me. I knew there will be some kind of invoice and labels with the price of the watch on the parcel. Therefore, i told the relative of mine to remove them before shipping it to me. I even requested this relative to declare the value as only USD100 because i know the customs here are bloodsuckers.

Ok. My relative shipped using Fedex so it reached here within the next day. Somehow it got delayed at the customs and i knew something was wrong. So i called Fedex and i got the shock of my life. I WAS TOLD TO PAY MORE THAN USD1000 FOR DUTIES AND TAXES! After some enquiring, the Fedex person told me that the customs over here found the actual invoice of USD5900 inside the parcel. FUCK! I can't believe i am so unlucky and i definitely didn't expect them to open the parcel.

I wrote an email to explain that the actual value wasn't that much but they still insisted that the value is USD5900. If the parcel is to be returned to Hong Kong, the duties and taxes will still have to be paid. I simply don't agree. The parcel didn't even reach me or leave the customs, i really don't think the amount should be paid. I am sure this won't happen anywhere else in the world. If the parcel is to be returned, no taxes will be charged. Anyway, the matter of fact is that the customs are really bloodsuckers! They just want money!

After 2 whole weeks of negotiation, the customs still insisted on the duties and taxes of more than USD1000. In order not to lose the watch, i can only agree to pay the amount.

So all in all, i have to pay like 20% more. Damn! I could have gotten another watch...Its a good lesson learnt for me.

Hedi Slimane's fashion moves

It's the news we're all waiting to hear and it looks like it's set to remain the news we're all waiting to hear as Hedi Slimane, former creative director at Dior Homme, stays tight-lipped about his plans for his future in fashion.

"It's a secret," the designer says in an interview on WWD, explaining that during the last six months he has been "considering options" and that there had been talks about the possibility of starting his own label.

One thing he can confirm, however, is his love for music photography as illustrated by his new book Rock Diary.

"I always think fashion is about the really precise moment. It should never be too early or late. That's why I always thought music is such an important medium because it definitely gives energy to fashion and codifies fashion and it's been like that since forever," he says.

Rock Diary Tokyo Night: Hedi Slimane

JAPAN MAN: Hedi Slimane is in Tokyo shooting Vogue Hommes Japan's debut cover but his involvement with the new magazine doesn't end there. He is also serving as the magazine's male muse as it gears up for its Sept. 10 launch. "In the men's fashion world there was a big change from 2000 when Hedi Slimane started at Dior Homme. There was fashion before Hedi Slimane and there was fashion after Hedi Slimane," said Kazuhiro Saito, editor in chief of Vogue Nippon and the new men's spin-off. "There were those very skinny, boyish male models. That works for Japanese guys.

"To wit, Slimane probably won't have to look far to generate his 20-page spread: a fashion shoot and a story probing the question, "Who is the Model Man?" On Monday night, Slimane will trade in his lens for turntables at Tokyo club Super Deluxe, where he is throwing a party with Dazed & Confused, another title he's helped shape.

Initially, Vogue Hommes Japan will publish twice a year and aims to boost its frequency over time. The book has a roster of bold-faced contributors including fashion director Nicola Formichetti, of Dazed & Confused, and art director Markus Kiersztan, who has collaborated with Nike, Yohji Yamamoto, Uniqlo and several others. Much of the magazine's regular staff and resources partially overlap with that of Vogue Nippon. [Vogue Hommes Japan and Vogue Nippon are published by Condé Nast International.]

Saito said he, Formichetti and Kiersztan are eager to develop a men's fashion magazine created by men, as opposed to France Sozzani's L'Uomo Vogue and Carine Roitfeld's Vogue Hommes International. "I spoke with Markus and Nicola and we agree these two magazines are very women-driven men's magazines," Saito said.

Meanwhile, Condé Nast Japan is gearing up to launch Glamour this summer. The magazine will be a close cousin to the French version of the magazine with a varied and democratic approach to fashion, targeting the lucrative 25- to 30-year-old "office lady" demographic, according to editor in chief Sayumi Gunji. Lifestyle stories on sex, dieting and dating will round out the offering."Office ladies have so much money...they are [such] active consumers in Japan," she said, noting the propensity for young Japanese women to accessorize their domestic brand workwear with designer handbags.

Glamour Japan is entering a crowded field of mass-market fashion mags including AneCan, Oggi, Sweet and Glamorous, where Gunji previously worked as fashion editor. Still, she thinks there is space for another title in the category especially since much of the competition focuses on tame, conservative workwear. "We want to combine every style into one magazine," she said.

Surface To Air - Justice collection

Every fashion house has a humble beginning, so does Surface To Air. Surface To Air is a rather new brand from Paris but it is already making a name for itself by collaborating with the group, Justice. The 2 members of Justice, Gaspard and Xavier are often seen wearing leather jackets. So this time round, the collection evolves around 2 leather jackets and they are named after them....

Gaspard leather jacket
Xavier leather jacket
I don't really like the jackets...instead i am beginning to like this...
